Les Ferdinand will give a short presentation to the local Old Oak FC
football team at the Old Oak Centre and give an award to Damien Burke,
who coached this team and achieved great results by winning the regional
finals of a 'Your Game 2007', five-a-side competition. It took place at
The Linford Christie Stadium 29th June 2007. This ran on the 29th June
and the Old Oak Team, to their surprise took the tournament by storm,
winning all their matches and qualifying for the National Finals in
Manchester! 'Your Game 2007' competition was organized by the BBC
and The Football Foundation.
Damien Burke, 24 year old local East Action boy, has lived on the Old Oak
Estate for 15 years and was working once a week at a local Primary School
running an after-school football club. Damian was desperate to gain
employment in sports coaching but had been unemployed since he left
school at the age of 16.
He was referred to Active Planet, local not-for-profit social
enterprise organisation via the Millennium Volunteers scheme
expressing interest in sports coaching with children and young people,
especially on his estate. Damien was interviewed and signed up to a 10
week Sports Coaching NEETS course (Not in Employment, Education or Training)
. This course was run in conjunction with The Hammersmith and Fulham
Volunteer Centre and targeted 16 young people aged 16-25.
Through the course Damien completed his Community Sports Leaders
Award, FA Level One, FA Futsal Level One, First Aid, Child Protection
Training and 100 hours Millennium Volunteer Certificate.
